There is a river, the streams whereof shall make glad the city of God, the holy place of the tabernacles of the most High. — Psalm 46:4
Each September, we recount the memory of September 11. It’s hard to believe that it was over 20 years ago that tragedy struck our nation and thousands were lost. We have all heard the stories, and even perhaps experienced, the chaos of that day firsthand.
The chaos that day happened with little warning. It was a typical morning and then all of the sudden, everything in the world was turned upside down. That seems to be how chaos happens in life. It doesn’t give us much warning when it is set to strike. We are just going about our business and then we are struck with some type of chaos.
In Psalm 46, the psalmist is describing chaos. The words describe a changing world, destroyed confidence, instability, and so much more. Yet, we get to verse 4 and the psalmist says amid all the chaos “there is a river.” It’s the idea of peace in the middle of chaos. It implies calm and security amid instability.
Do you ever feel like things in your life are unstable? Does your world feel like chaos? Maybe you even feel like things are changing right before you and you simply cannot keep up. The chaos can be overwhelming and discouraging, but don’t let it get you down.
Amid all the chaos and instability is a God who is in control! He can bring peace to you no matter what is going on. While the earth around you may be shaky, the mountains may seem to be crumbling, there is a God in control. He has a river of peace just for you in the middle of your chaos!
