Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. — Matthew 5:15

If you have ever had the opportunity to watch a sunrise in the morning, it is a beautiful sight. One of my favorites has been along the east coast of the US where you can watch the sun rise above the water. You simply look out and see darkness, then suddenly, a bright light appears on the horizon. As the sun rises, all of the darkness is eroded away. The higher the sun rises, the brighter it seems to get.

Then there is the times where it’s a dark and dreary day. The clouds have built around and are blocking the sun from being seen. Sure, some light may be seen, but it is far from the bright light that it normally is. It’s much easier to see in the bright light rather than the darkness.

Jesus was teaching in Matthew 5 about Christians being the light of the world. He shared that we are the light. In verse 15, Jesus gave an example that no one lights a candle and hides it. Instead, they set it high on a candlestick. It’s to be open and visible to all that are around, sharing light in the middle of darkness.

Spiritually, our world is filled with darkness all around. You do not have to look far to find darkness. The news will share of the evils of this world. Murder, corruption, theft, and lies are all around us. We have to realize that our calling is not to fix the world, but rather to be a light.

As Christians, we should be focused on letting our light shine as brightly as possible. We should desire that our light is visible among the darkness of this world. We shouldn’t hide our faith, but rather take a stand for it. We cannot fix the darkness in this world, but we can shed some light on it. Are you letting your light shine brightly for God?
