And the LORD appeared unto him the same night, and said, I am the God of Abraham thy father: fear not, for I am with thee, and will bless thee, and multiply thy seed for my servant Abraham’s sake. And he builded an altar there, and called upon the name of the LORD, and pitched his tent there: and there Isaac’s servants digged a well. — Genesis 26:24 – 25

I remember growing up and my parents would often say the words to me, “you must do it yourself.” They have reminded me of all the times that they had to make me do things that I didn’t want to do. But I remember some of the times in my life when I was nervous, scared, or uncertain and they told me that I needed to do it myself.

Many of those times may have been on a basketball court, a baseball field, or perhaps even a school test. My parents were unable to do those things for me. They were unable to play the games or take the tests. I had to do it myself.

Now, I find myself saying those exact same words to my son. There are times when he does not want to do something, but I have to tell him that he must do it himself. It is important that he learn skills in life to prepare him for what lies ahead.

The same goes for us spiritually as well. There are many of you that are reading this that may have had parents of faith who guided you in your understanding of God. Others, you may have come to know God through a friend, coworker, missionary, or many other ways. The truth is that none of those people could accept Jesus for you, you had to do it yourself.

While others can pray for you, support you, talk to you, or many other things, your life is yours. You make the decisions that you must deal with. You are the one who chooses your path. Isaac had a great example in his father Abraham, but Isaac had to choose to live for God himself. No one else can live for God for you. You must do it yourself.
