Then said Pilate to the chief priests and to the people, I find no fault in this man. — Luke 23:4

If you ask people who know me well, they will certainly tell you about the many things I am guilty of. If we are honest, we are all far from perfect. We all have a past, we have our failures, and we have many things about us that would cause people to make assumptions about us.

Certainly, this could have been the case for Pilate. The people of that day had made a lot of statements about Jesus. I am not claiming to be Jesus with the example I made. I’m merely saying that statements and assumptions are still made about people based on their actions and things we hear about them.

Sometimes those statements and assumptions are true and in other circumstances, they are not. Such was the case with Jesus. They were not going to be satisfied until Jesus was put to death. The Bible tells us that Pilate told the people multiple times that Jesus did nothing worthy of being put to death. Yet, they still demanded His death.

In our lives, all of us will examine the evidence surrounding Jesus. We read the stories from the Bible, we evaluate the evidence that we see, and the things that we hear others say about Him. The evidence presented to Pilate convinced him of one thing: Jesus was innocent and didn’t deserve to die. When I examine the evidence, I find Him guilty.

When Pilate looked at Jesus, he only saw the evidence that was before Him. Pilate couldn’t see all the evidence. As Jesus stood before Pilate, Jesus saw the sins of all mankind. Jesus was never guilty in the eyes of Pilate, but He was guilty of loving you and me. What an amazing love!
