And the Midianites and the Amalekites and all the children of the east lay along in the valley like grasshoppers for multitude; and their camels were without number, as the sand by the sea side for multitude. — Judges 7:12
I have often wondered about the thoughts going through Gideon’s mind at this very moment. God had promised that he would deliver victory to Gideon. He started with 32,000 in his army, which was cut down to 10,000 when he sent all those that were afraid home. Then God challenged him again and the number was once again cut down to a mere 300 men.
Then he approaches the valley and it says that the enemy that was before them was all over the valley like grasshoppers. They were everywhere! In every direction that Gideon looked, there was the enemy. He looked left, they were there. He looked straight, they were there. Imagine the horror as he looked to the right and there were even more. The enemy vastly outnumbered his 300 men.
By all logical accounts, there was no way that Gideon and his army would win the battle over this many soldiers. Yet, God promised that He would deliver victory. I wonder if Gideon has the same thoughts that we often do. You know, that thought of “God, how are you going to do this?!”
There are so many times in life that we face circumstances that in each direction we look, we seem overwhelmed. You try to turn a different way and there is another circumstance. When you are facing the enemy, it can be easy to feel overwhelmed.
It is in those situations that God proves Himself beyond our imaginations. In the situations we should never be able to overcome, God is able to overcome. The next time you find yourself outnumbered by the enemy, remember Gideon. Remember it doesn’t take all the greatness of this world to overcome, it only takes God.
