Looking for opportunities to serve God

But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus. — Philippians 4:19

I was recently watching a video online that showed someone who was at a drive-through window and they were paying for their order. Once they completed their payment, they asked if they would be able to pay for the car behind them. The person who was paying said they wanted to do something nice for someone that day. The next car approached and they were shocked because their meal was paid for.

In some of these videos, I have seen these scenarios go on car after car where each car pays for the next person’s meal. Other times, it simply stops after one. This is just one example of a situation where we can see how people are trying to do things for others. I also think about those who spend their time volunteering, supporting missions, or helping those in need. If you ask many of them why many give the same answer. They have either been helped before or know someone would help them.

In writing to the Philippians, Paul had just finished sharing his appreciation for their help. The church had stood by him during difficulty and cared for him during a time of need. Many will take this verse and relate it to the idea that God is going to give us everything that we want in life. That is not what Paul is saying at all.

Paul is sharing with the church that because they were so kind, he knew that God would bless them above that which they had given. While they sacrificed a little, God would repay them with His vast riches in glory. He shared that if something was given for the right reason, God would richly bless in return.

Many times we look for others to provide encouragement, help, and strength to us. Are we doing our part to provide strength to others? Are we doing our part to support the cause of Christ, missions, and in other places in our community where we can? If we are, God will truly bless us in return. As you pray today, ask God to show you ways where you can be an encouragement and help to others. There is no shortage of opportunities.
