All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works. — 2 Timothy 3:16-17

A few weeks ago, I read the story of a young baseball player that was well on his way to becoming a professional star. The article commented on his skills and his performance up to that point. In the article, it made the statement that stuck with me. The writer said that the player was “a well-rounded player.”

The idea of this player being well-rounded meant that he was knowledgeable in a wide variety of aspects of the game of baseball. He was just as good playing defense as he was offense. You had to look hard at his game to find a weakness because he had studied many hours and practiced so intensely for years.

While the Christian life is certainly not a baseball game, there is an interesting aspect of this for us to learn from. A baseball player does not become a strong, well-rounded player by simply sitting on the bench and letting others play. They must practice and learn. They must study and develop their skills.

The same goes for the Christian. We know that all scripture is given by God and for a purpose. Through our study and practice, God is able to help us to develop into something far more than someone sitting on the sideline. But it takes studying and practice. It takes our commitment to learning the word of God and letting God use it to help develop us.

If your life was being evaluated today, would they say that you are a well-rounded Christian? Would they say that you are committed to the study and practice of God’s word? God wants us all to be more than Christians in name, He wants us all to develop into well-rounded Christians.
