Nevertheless I am continually with thee: thou hast holden me by my right hand. — Psalm 73:23

Once, I had the opportunity to hear a coworker tell an interesting story about the start of their day. The morning had been completely normal, nothing unexpected. They were on their drive to work when all of the sudden they heard a loud pop! The next thing they knew, their car was going off the road and they said the words that I will never forget, “all I could do was hang on.”

At that moment, they were unable to control the things going on with their car. If they turned the wheel, the car wouldn’t respond. They were left at the mercy of the events taking place and attempted to make sense of it after the situation was over. Thankfully, they were not injured, but they did have quite the situation to deal with in the aftermath.

There are certainly times in life when it seems that we just have to hang on. Things happen that are unexpected and they send our world into chaos. We can try to direct where things are going, but we are unable to. Try as much as we can, we may find ourselves where we are simply looking for something to hold on it.

The psalmist here writes words that were obviously a result of some of those trying times of life. The words that really stand out here are “holden me by my right hand.” What the psalmist is describing is not something that is reactionary here, but rather one of purposeful action. God purposefully put forth His protecting hand to give the writer something to hold on to when the world was chaotic around him.

Life brings about those chaotic times. Sometimes we find ourselves in a gradual move into them. Other times, we find that they are sudden events. No matter the situation, remember that we have a God who has extended His hand of protection to us. Sometimes, you just have to hang on. What better thing to hang on to than the hand of an Almighty God!
