And again I say unto you, It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God. — Matthew 19:24

There is a growing consensus in our culture that those who may be called “rich” are evil. We often hear those who call for increased taxes on those who are rich. Politicians often say that those who are rich should pay more than those who are not. It creates the mentality that rich people are different types of people.

Especially in a world that teaches you that money is the thing that matters. We are often told that striving for the highest salary possible is what is the key to success. Children are told they need to push for the best paying jobs, and even refuse to do those jobs that no one wants to do. That is certainly different than the teachings that we find in scripture.

In this parable that Jesus shared in multiple accounts, He shares there is a danger that comes along with money. He said it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter Heaven. Why? Because that rich man puts his faith in his wealth. Their money becomes the source of their affection and their desire, filling their mind and leaving little space for God. That isn’t to say that there are not rich people who are Christians and truly believe in God.

So what is the point? Jesus is teaching that it is so easy to become so consumed with the riches of this world that we forget that the real riches lie ahead in Heaven. You can store up all the money, gold, and silver in this world, but in the end, it is all worthless. None of it will last forever.

Instead of focusing all of our attention on worldly success, we should focus our attention on Heaven. If we are blessed with worldly riches, we should use those to promote and further the kingdom of God. As we go through our day and a world that tells us to strive for all the success this world has to offer, we must remember the truth that Jesus shared. True success is not of this world. Today, don’t lose focus on what matters. Keep your eyes on Heaven!
