For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. — Ephesians 6:12

We have seen several examples in modern history where military leaders underestimated the enemy. Just a short time ago, we witnessed the withdrawal of American troops from Afghanistan where it was estimated that the Taliban would overrun the country after about 18 months. Instead, it took just 10 days.

There was a severe underestimation of the Taliban and their capabilities. They swept across Afghanistan and took over the nation once again. This is a great example of that underestimation.

In his writing, Paul was sharing that we are not fighting against those around us, but our spiritual battles are with principalities and powers of darkness. We are in a battle against sin and Satan. It is pure and utter evil and darkness that we are up against.

Yet, so many times we underestimate the power of the enemy. We do not realize that we do not have the power on our own to overcome this darkness. We cannot overcome the wickedness and all that Satan throws at us. Paul continues by sharing that we should put on the whole armor of God.

We can do everything in ourselves to battle the wickedness and sin of this world, but we cannot do it without God. We seem to ignore so many times that we need God’s help. Our ability to overcome depends completely on Him. Instead of trying to overcome the temptations and trials of life on our own, we must realize that we need God’s help. We cannot underestimate the enemy that we are up against.

Today, no matter what you may be facing, ask God for help. He alone is capable of helping you to overcome. Don’t underestimate the enemy and powers that you are fighting. He has overcome the world and can help you overcome the situation that you are facing.
