And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst. — John 6:35
There was a man that lived in Europe many years ago named Blaise Pascal. He was a French mathematician, who is credited with inventing the calculator, inventing the syringe, pioneering modern public transit, and many other things. He was a religious man and was often called crazy by those around him.
While some of his statements may be questionable, he made one statement that was very interesting. The statement is, “there is a God-shaped vacuum in the heart of each man which cannot be satisfied by any created thing but only by God the Creator, made know through Jesus Christ.” Pascal knew that the path to God was through Jesus and that only God could satisfy.
People around the world are looking for satisfaction in a variety of things. For some, it can be possessions, vacations, or social gatherings. Others indulge in substances, like illegal drugs or medications, in an effort to find peace and satisfaction in their heart. Pascal was right about one thing, there is nothing that is created here in this world that can satisfy the heart.
So often, we pour all of our time and attention into the things of this world. It’s not that there are not things in this world that are important, but there are things that are more important. We get one chance at life and we spend so much of it on things that will satisfy us for such a short period of time. Jesus shared that true satisfaction can only be found through Him.
Instead of trying to fill the vacuum in our lives with things of this world, we should desire to fill our lives with things of God. Rather than focusing on things that are short-lived and things that will fade with our death, we can focus on things that are eternal in sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ with a world that is filled with sin. Today, let’s pray that God will help us become completely satisfied in Him so that we will not be distracted by the things of this world. That’s the only way to real satisfaction.
