While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal. — 2 Corinthians 4:18

A couple of years ago, I had the opportunity to attend an event where there were going to be a lot of powerful people attending. US Senators, Representatives, and other community leaders were all going to be in one place at one event. The experience was quite overwhelming.

Not because these people are different than me. They are all human just like me. Each one of them gets up just like I do and they go through their day just like I do. It was overwhelming because I do not consider that I am anything special. Yet, each one of these leaders thought it was important to take a few minutes out of their day to talk to me.

I was not a donor to the various political campaigns. I wasn’t a powerful business leader that could change society or improve the notoriety of those around me. It was an opportunity that was presented to me through a simple introduction several months before.

Not long after the event, I was struck with quite an amazing thought. At the time, I had been amazed that these people took time to speak to me. It was surprising that they wanted to shake my hand and get to know me. They thought it was worth a few minutes of their time.

The next day, my life was back to normal and nothing had changed. I woke up the next day and I was still the same person, with the same job, and the same problems in life. Simply receiving notoriety from these didn’t change my circumstances. It was then that I was quickly reminded of the words of Scripture.

You can receive all of the notoriety of this world, but at the end of the day, the things that are important to you in life do not change. The people I had met couldn’t change the frustrations I was experiencing, the heartaches, the trials, or the difficulties. Only one could change those things in my life.

God is ready, willing, and able to help in any circumstances of our life. He can take the circumstances that you are in and transform them beyond our wildest imagination. Rather than looking to the world to escape our cares and struggles, we should look to the one who created the world and all that is in it.
