Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever thou hadst formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God. — Psalm 90:2
There are many things in history that I have read about in books. I have read a lot of things about ancient Chinese history before we adopted our son in China. It is fascinating history, but I was not there to verify the things that I read about.
I have also read about other things, like the establishment of the United States of America in the late 1700s. There were a lot of interesting events that led to the founding of our nation, but I wasn’t here for those. I have even read about many events like the Great Depression and heard stories of those who lived through it, but I was not there for those things.
While I may have not been alive for those events, it does not change the fact that they happened. I can go to the historical buildings, landmarks, and other things that continue to prove them. As great as history is, it cannot take us back but as far as we preserved it.
While I may have not been present for these events that happened, God was. In fact, as we are reminded in this Psalm, God was present from the foundation of the world. Before the mountains and valleys were formed, He was. He was, is, and forever will be.
Just like those physical mountains and valleys, God was present before the mountains and valleys of your life also. He knew exactly where the mountain would be, and exactly where the valley would lead.
Nothing that has come into your life has caught God by surprise. He knew it all before, preparing you to face each and everything that you would face. It can be challenging to see this as we struggle in what sometimes seems to be the out-of-control chaos of this world.
Through it all, don’t doubt that God has things under control. As the psalmist says, from the beginning and until the end, He is God!
