And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone. — Ephesians 2:20
I remember a few years ago when we were in New York City, we toured the One World Trade Center tower. I will never forget the introduction to the tour talking about the foundation of the building going well below the ground and being secured at such depths so it could support the massive height and weight of the building.
The construction did not start at the top of the building, but rather at the bottom. Now you may laugh that I wrote that statement, but that is exactly what many people try to do with things in life. They try to start building things in the middle, or near the end, rather than at the bottom.
The importance of a solid foundation has been discovered throughout time. Buildings were built, and many collapsed. They were not built on something that was solid and secure. Perhaps the foundation that they were built on was too small and unable to support the weight.
Just as a foundation is important in building an actual building, it is important in our spiritual lives as well. There are many people that are claiming a Christian life, but they have never accepted Christ as their Savior. Without that cornerstone, their “Christian” life is almost certain to crumble. But what about those of us who have accepted Christ as Savior?
It is important that we not only have Christ as our foundation, but our lives built around that foundation to provide support. It starts with salvation, but our spiritual lives need the support of daily prayer and Bible reading for support. What is the foundation of your life? Is it founded on Jesus Christ and supported with the Bible and prayer or will it crumble when the storms of life test it? Our desire should be to have a foundation so secure in God that the storms and trials of life cannot shake them.
