And she had a sister called Mary, which also sat at Jesus’ feet, and heard his word. But Martha was cumbered about much serving, and came to him, and said, Lord, dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone? bid her therefore that she help me. — Luke 10:39-40
The world is a hectic and busy place, I do not think that anyone would disagree. For the Christian, so many times we get caught up in all the busyness of things, that we do not take a moment to just sit and listen.
I am not simply talking about the day-to-day things that may keep us busy. Sure, the family demands and job demands can be great, but that is not what I’m talking about. I think about Martha in this Scripture, while she was busy, the things she was doing were for God. She was serving.
It seems that we so many times get bogged down doing so many things that we may forget to take a step back and just sit and listen to God. It isn’t that we are doing anything wrong. I see so many Christians that are working their hearts out for missions, church programs, and other great things. Those are all wonderful in their place, but we still have to take a moment to sit back and listen to God sometimes.
Jesus told Martha that Mary had done just that. It was not that she was being negligent, but she needed a few moments to just be still and listen to God. When we take a few moments and give Him our attention, listening to what He says, it prepares us for all the other things of life. Amid all the other things that may be demanding your time, take a few moments today and just listen to God. You may find yourself surprise at what you hear.
