As for God, his way is perfect: the word of the Lord is tried: he is a buckler to all those that trust in him. — Psalm 18:30

Our lives are filled with many mysteries. Things that we wonder about and, in this present life, we just don’t have answers for. The kinds of things that the Lord, in His divine plan and purpose, has never seen fit to allow us to know. That disturbs some people. There are those that feel as though the Lord always owes them an explanation for everything that they face in life. Throughout the Bible we meet many people who faced difficult situations and had some burning questions in their hearts as to why it had to be so, but the Lord didn’t always provide an answer for them. I think of Job in particular, which we often refer back to. The Lord never gave him an explanation of why he faced all he faced.

The psalmist David is another. There are things David faced because of sin in his life and he knew it. Then there were times that often in the psalms David asked the Lord why things were as they were, but I’m not sure the Lord always gave him the answer he sought. I came across a verse in the middle of a psalm that David penned once when the Lord had delivered him from the hand of his enemies and from the hand of Saul. In Psalm 18:30 David wrote, As for God, his way is perfect: the word of the LORD is tried: he is a buckler to all those that trust in him.

It is that first phrase that caught my eye. David was saying that in the Lord’s dealings with him that God’s ways were perfect. The word ways means His dealings, His methods, the administration of David’s life has been without defect or lacking in anything. He is saying in effect that all that the Lord has done in my life has been in His perfect plan and design. I may not always understand it; I may not always be able to explain it or figure out the reason or purpose behind it, but He knows exactly what He is doing at all times in my life and it is always right and it is always perfectly in accordance to His design for me.

It was over a century ago that Charles H. Gabriel wrote those words that have encouraged so many of God’s children which says, “Let not your heart be troubled, His tender word I hear; And resting on His goodness, I lose my doubts and fears; Though by the path He leadeth, but one step I may see; His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me; His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.”

I may not always understand His ways, but I can always trust His heart and know that He is my strength and my comfort in any time of need. You may wonder if He is watching or if He is still in control. As Gabriel said, “His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.” His way, though we may not fully understand, is always perfect.
