Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven. — Matthew 5:16
I will never forget the words of one of my former supervisors. The man, who was not a Christian at the time, gave some profound advice that many Christians could learn from. He once told me, “there’s always two examples. A good example and a bad example. You never want to be the bad example.”
I will never forget those words for as long as I live because they were so true. There are so many examples in life and you certainly do not want to be the bad example. You always want to set the right example, especially as a Christian.
Scripture gives many great examples of a bad examples. Think about Eve tempting Adam in the garden to take of the forbidden fruit. I also think about Moses and how he disobeyed God when God said speak to the rock and Moses hit the rock. Another I think about is Lot’s wife as they fled from Sodom and Gomorrah and she looked back when they were told not to.
Every aspect of a Christian’s life is being watched. We are setting an example with every word we say and every deed we do. What is the example that we are setting? Will we be remembered as the good example or the bad example?
In everything we do, we should set forth a good example, letting our light shine before others so that our words and actions glorify God. We should want others to look at our life and instead of seeing us, they should see our Savior. After all, He is what really matters.
