Calling on the Lord in Truth

The LORD is nigh unto all them that call upon him, to all that call upon him in truth. — Psalm 145:18

As we were walking through the crowd, I remember how uncomfortable my son became. Christmas was just around the corner, and people were absolutely everywhere! It wasn’t long before I felt his hand reach for mine and grab on tight. As we walked, he pulled himself close to me and began talking to me about how he was feeling at that moment.

He didn’t wait until the crowd disappeared. He didn’t try to sort through his feelings first or find the right words. He simply reached for my hand and spoke honestly. His closeness was his comfort, and his honesty was enough.

This is the picture Scripture gives us of prayer. The Lord is near. Not distant, not distracted, not reserved for calmer seasons. He draws near to those who call on Him in truth. Prayer is not performance. It is a relationship. It is the act of drawing close and speaking honestly in the middle of what feels overwhelming.

So often, we think prayer requires quiet, clarity, or confidence. But God meets us in crowded moments, when our hearts are anxious, when our thoughts are scattered, when our words are imperfect. Like a child reaching for a parent’s hand, prayer becomes our way of staying close.

Calling on the Lord “in truth” means we come as we are — not hiding discomfort, not pretending strength, not waiting until things feel manageable. We speak what is real, trusting that God is already near.

Today, prayer may be as simple as reaching for God’s presence and telling Him how you feel. He is near, and that nearness is your peace. Where do you feel overwhelmed or unsettled right now? How might prayer become an act of drawing close rather than finding the right words?
