Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall. — Proverbs 16:18

Many years ago, I used to love to play sports. I would spend countless hours playing basketball and baseball at nearly every opportunity that I had. There were many times I would play games at school during breaks with others. On one of those occasions, we were going back and forth about who was the best player, like kids often do. As we each made our case, the time came to prove it.

So we started playing a game and soon, I learned a difficult lesson. Nearly every shot that I attempted was either blocked or I missed. The other player was much taller than I was. They were more experienced and the knowledge that they had was on display. Every time I attempted to stop their move, I failed. I learned a challenging lesson that day.

Life has a way of teaching us lessons in moments like this. Our human nature is to believe we are capable on our own and that we can accomplish anything within our means. The reality is that we depend on God for everything, who blesses us with our skills and abilities.

While we often want to reassure ourselves based on our own skills and abilities, we need to learn that our reliance is on God for everything. When we fail to realize our dependence on God, it can lead to pride in our lives. Pride that stands in our way of serving God according to His will.

If you are relying on yourself today, you are going to fail. Your skills and ability alone are not enough. We are all in need of God and dependent upon Him. As you reflect today, are you trusting in yourself, or are you trusting in Him?
