This I recall to my mind, therefore have I hope. — Lamentations 3:21

There are many times in my life when I think about the past. I remember many years ago listening to my grandfather talk about days long before I was born. He would talk about things that he did when he was a child. He would talk about other people and share specific things about them. Learning about family and events that led to where we were at the time helped me understand things.

I also remember him sharing stories about how God worked in the past. He would tell me how God changed someone’s life. He shared stories about church services where lives were impacted and changed. This was a reminder about the power of God, the love of God, and the history of God’s work.

Others would share similar stories with me as well. They would often share experiences in their lives where they were about to give up hope. Perhaps they were going through challenges and difficulties that pressured them beyond measure. They would often share how God helped them through, giving them strength and comfort to continue on.

In this verse, Jeremiah was reminded about things. He was reminded about the actions of God in the past and the love of God in the present. God had helped them before now, showing His care and compassion. But now, in the midst of sin and sorrow, God’s mercy was overwhelming, and his compassion continued. Jeremiah knew that even though things were bad, God was still good!

Maybe you feel like things are overwhelming in life. Perhaps sin and sorrow overwhelm you, or trials and struggles are pressing you down. Today, remember a few things. God’s mercy continues, and His compassion never fails. He has been faithful before and will continue to be faithful. In remembering these things, you can take hope, just like Jeremiah. God is still good!
