We hanged our harps upon the willows in the midst thereof. — Psalm 137:2
Not long ago, I was talking to someone who was much older in life. They were talking about the good old days and how things had changed so much over time. As we spoke, this person said, “You are much younger and have so much ahead of you still. For me, I’m done. There is not much left that I can do.”
As the conversation continued, I shared how our lives are ordained by God. Until God is finished with us, there is plenty for us all to do. This individual shared that they agree that God has a purpose and plan for us all but that no one wants to deal with someone who is older. For them, they saw their life as a burden at this point. It was troublesome to hear.
I was reminded of Psalm 137 as we spoke. In this Psalm, verse one is a reflection of days gone by. When we get here to verse 2, the psalmist writes that they were ready to hang it up. No more worship, no more praise. The harps were hung, and the song of joy was gone.
There are times in our lives when we may feel this way. We may feel that we have done all that we can do, but it is not time to hang it up! As long as we have breath, we have the ability to serve God, worship and praise Him, and live for Him in a way that will accomplish His will.
Perhaps you feel like hanging it up today. Maybe you feel as though no one cares, no one listens, or even no one appreciates what you have to contribute. But God does! He cares, He hears, and He has a purpose and plan for your life. Rather than hanging it up, trust it to God! Devote your life completely to Him and see what He can do through you!
