Blessed is the people that know the joyful sound: they shall walk, O LORD, in the light of thy countenance. — Psalm 89:15

My family and I were walking together when we started to hear something in the distance. It caught my son’s attention among all the other noise and he immediately looked at me. He heard music. It wasn’t the first time he heard music, but this definitely got his attention. As we continued, the music grew louder.

Soon, we were standing beside a group of people that were playing music. There were several different instruments being used. They were playing and singing and this caught the attention of my son who wanted to stop and listen. After a few minutes, the song was over and he was ready to continue on. I remember him looking at me as we walked away and talking about the beautiful music.

There are many people who consider music on the street to be bothersome. They prefer to keep their ear buds in and continue on. But for my son, who was born deaf, hearing that music was amazing to him. He loves music and he considers it special when he gets to hear music.

In this psalm, the psalmist writes the blessing it is to hear the joyful sound. That is, it’s a blessing to hear others praise God. While there are some who might consider it bothersome, there’s something special about the joyful sound. It’s a blessing to be able to hear it!

There are two challenges to consider from this. First, do we count it a blessing when we hear the joyful sound? But perhaps the most challenging: Do we praise God like we should so that others can hear? God is worthy of our praise, and being able to praise Him, and to hear others praise Him, is a special blessing.
