When he giveth quietness, who then can make trouble? and when he hideth his face, who then can behold him? whether it be done against a nation, or against a man only. — Job 34:29
Our lives are busy! It really doesn’t seem to matter what age you are anymore. I hear people talking about their kids and all the events that they take them to. Kids are into all sorts of sports and events these days. Parents take them around nearly every single day to do something and chase their dreams.
As they get older, the kids continue to have busy lives, while parents hope that they are going to slow down. But it doesn’t seem to be that way. I often listen to people talk, and they describe how their lives are so busy. They share how they hoped to slow down, but they are always finding things to do.
But I’m reminded of those moments when God brings quietness into our lives. Those are not always the easiest moments for us. The quietness often comes through heartache, tragedy, trials, and uncertainty. It is in those moments that we often sit back and reflect, perhaps even questioning God.
In this verse in Job, he writes about those quiet times that God gives. In those moments, Job realizes that when God provides quietness, He has a purpose. Sometimes, it is a means to draw us closer. Sometimes, it gives us rest. Many times, we experience the peace and comfort of God in those moments unlike any other.
God sends quietness in life for many reasons. When He does, we should take a moment and realize that the God of rest, peace, and grace has given it to us for a purpose. Sometimes, the quietness is a blessing we never realized that we needed.
