Treasures of wickedness profit nothing: but righteousness delivereth from death. — Proverbs 10:2
If you are like me, you have often heard stories about people who have worked their lives away. Perhaps they worked multiple jobs, multiple shifts, and spent years chasing things in this world. It isn’t that they were working to become famous, they simply were working to have things. They wanted the nicest cars, houses, or even to enjoy nice trips.
Many times as we chase those types of things, we find that we neglect the important things in life. Family can often take a backseat. Friendships can suffer due to a lack of time and communication. More than that, often, our relationship with God suffers when we are going through things such as this. We simply don’t have or make time to spend with Him like we should.
There is nothing wrong with enjoying nice things in this life. The challenge is that we enjoy them at the right time and place. That we do not spend our time chasing them, giving away the precious moments of life that we will never get back. Those treasures of this world profit nothing, as this verse says. Chasing those treasures of this world are the things that the wicked do.
But as Christians, we are called to be different. We are called to live our lives separated and dedicated to God. While we live in this world, we are not to be like this world. When we face those moments of temptation to chase the treasures of this world, we must ask ourselves, is it worth it?
While it may seem worth it for a little while, it really isn’t. It isn’t worth the time and effort because it will all pass away one day. Our desire should be to spend time on the things that matter, like living for God.
