I will never forget the first time my son pitched a fit when he did not get his way. Like any other kid, he believed that he deserved to get what he wanted. When he asked on this one occasion, I had a specific reason in mind. That doesn’t mean he liked it. I saw his face turn to disappointment, then anger, and soon he stomped out of the room mad.
Like most kids, it wasn’t but a few minutes and soon his mind was on other things. The older that he gets, the longer he seems to dwell on things. Which is common for us as we get older. There are many adults that dwell on things for years, especially when things don’t go their way.
Just before this verse in Psalm 5, David had been talking about his enemies. It is obvious something didn’t go his way. He was praying that God would destroy his enemies, to let them fall, and for judgment to rain down upon them. Sounds like the response of many Christians when they don’t get their way!
God never promised that things would always go right for us. But He did promise that He will never leave us nor forsake us. He never promised a perfect walk in life, but He did promise protection, care, and grace. With those things in mind, we can easily see how we should respond when things don’t go our way.
Instead of anger, frustration, and disappointment, we should remember our place in this life. It is just temporary. Next, We should remember the promises of God. Finally, we should remember that God is still in control. We are blessed to be His children, even when things don’t go our way.
