Changing of the guard

Changing of the guard

Moses my servant is dead; now therefore arise, go over this Jordan, thou, and all this people, unto the land which I do give to them, even to the children of Israel.— Joshua 1:2

On a few occasions, I had the opportunity to witness the changing of the guards at Arlington National Cemetery. Twenty-four hours per day, seven days per week, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is guarded. At least once per hour, the guard is changed.

It is an amazing ceremony to watch given the rich history. An intense focus is placed on an immaculate ceremony. While the uniforms appear perfect and the soldiers appear perfect, it would be impossible for one soldier to stand guard for extended periods of time. The heat and cold, as well as the intense pressure they face for perfection, create a need for the guard to change. In other words, the guard cannot last forever.

Such was the case of Moses. Moses had led for quite some time, but Moses had died. The time had come to change the guard of leaders, and it was Joshua’s time. Whether he felt ready or not, it was his time. God wanted to use him.

There are times in each of our lives when God is ready to use us as well. Many Christian leaders of yesterday are gone. God is looking for those who are willing to serve Him and follow Him in our day. Whether we are ready or not, God is ready to use us!

The question is if we will submit to God and let Him use us. He has a plan and a purpose for us. Our world needs Christians who are willing to stand up for truth and lead others to God. If this is your time, will you let God use you?

Across the world, Christians need the encouragement and strength that only God’s word can provide. We are focused on helping Christians find encouragement, develop stronger relationships with God, and help non-Christians accept Jesus Christ as Savior. Another Well Ministries is a non-profit ministry that relies on donations to continue its work. You can find out more about us and ways to support us here.
