My soul followeth hard after thee: thy right hand upholdeth me. — Psalm 63:8
I have often heard it said that the overwhelming majority of people are right-handed. While there are some variations in statistics, some of the more scientific sources believe that as many as 90% of all people are right-handed. In fact, one of the most interesting things is that a dominant hand separates people from others whom science would say we “evolved” from. Most show no dominant choice in hands, as humans do.
The idea of right-hand dominance obviously had a commonplace in the Bible. Throughout scripture, the right hand is mentioned. The Bible mentions Jesus on the right hand of God at the throne. There is reference to the power of God’s right hand. There are multiple references to the right hand of God upholding us and providing us strength. Such is the case here in this Psalm.
The right hand doesn’t gain its dominance all at once. Over time, we use our dominant hand more. We lean on it for strength, force, and completion. When times are tough, we rely on the strength of our dominant hand to get us through. This is the idea that David is sharing here.
We didn’t get to the place of reliance on God just by accident. Throughout our time as Christians, we have learned how He will sustain us. We have learned how God protects us, provides for us, and upholds us. In turn, we should easily see that God is the one that upholds us.
But there are times when we become focused on other things. There are times where we get distracted, and, at times, begin to try and rely on “other things.” But instead, we should continue to rely on the hand that has never once let us down!
Maybe you have become distracted by the “other things” of life. Perhaps you are trying to rely on your own merits or things in this world. Instead, don’t forget the hand of God! It’s the one that has never let you down. It has never failed and it never will.
Across the world, there are Christians who need encouragement and strength that only God’s word can provide. We are focused on helping Christians find encouragement, develop stronger relationships with God, and help non-Christians come to accept Jesus Christ as Savior. Another Well Ministries is a non-profit ministry that relies on donations to continue our work. You can find out more about us and ways to support us here.
