For it seemed good to the Holy Ghost, and to us, to lay upon you no greater burden than these necessary things. — Acts 15:28

One day, as I sat in paramedic class, I’ll never forget the instructor walking into the room. He brought in an empty gear bag and sat it down on the table. Around the room, we had supply closets full of things to help us prepare for our time as a paramedic on the ambulance. He sat the bag down on the table and said we had just a few minutes to determine what needed to be in the bag and pack it.

Among our classmates, we had some who were already working for an EMS crew. They were methodically going around the room, selecting things and placing them on the table to pack in the bag. Others were frantically going cabinet to cabinet, attempting to pack everything in the bag.

In the end, we were unable to get all the supplies we selected into the bag. The bag was so heavy, so overfilled, that it was nearly impossible to carry. That is when the instructor looked at us and said some words I’ll never forget. Look at each of these items and decide is it necessary.

In life, we often carry around a lot of things. We carry the burdens of our family, friends, coworkers, and many others. We have our own burdens and concerns. So many times, we carry the weight of so much that it drags us down to where we are almost defeated and deflated.

But is it necessary? I am reminded of the words of Matthew 11:28. No matter what you are carrying, no matter how heavy the load, He invites all to come and find rest! It is not necessary that you carry the burden on your own. Take it to God and let Him give you the help and rest that you need.

Across the world, there are Christians who need encouragement and strength that only God’s word can provide. We are focused on helping Christians find encouragement, develop stronger relationships with God, and help non-Christians come to accept Jesus Christ as Savior.
