Bear ye one another’s burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ. — Galatians 6:2
We had just returned from the grocery store, and my son was excited. There are a lot of times when things that I do he cannot help with. He may be unable to lift something extremely heavy, or climb a ladder. But he loves it when it is something that he can help with. He gets excited, and he will almost force you out of the way so he can help.
That was the case in carrying the groceries from the car to the house. He pushed me out of the way and said, “Let me get it, I got it.” One by one, I see him make trip after trip to the house with handfuls of bags. But then he got to the heaviest bag of all. He tried to lift it and realized he couldn’t do it alone.
He turned and said to me, “Dad, can you help?” He didn’t ask me to take it myself. He wanted to know I was there, supporting and helping him with the weight. I reached over and grabbed one handle of the bag, and we both lifted it. He led the way, and I supported him into the house with the heavy load.
We often cannot remove the burdens someone else faces in life. Their circumstances and situations are out of our control. But the expectation is that when they find themselves in those moments, we help them bear their burdens. Our lives were designed to interact and help those around us in need.
That means when we find ourselves facing burdens, we should tell others. There should be no hesitation to ask for prayer and support from a fellow Christian. But when they approach us in need, our immediate response should be to lift them in prayer and help them carry their burdens, too.
