I am the LORD thy God, which brought thee out of the land of Egypt: — Psalm 81:10

There was a movie, based on a true story, that I watched several years ago where someone was bragging about something they had accomplished. They had achieved excellence in a specific area and were the envy of everyone around them. At one particular moment in the movie, the character started bragging and kept saying “I did that.” That moment continued amid all the bragging and gloating about how great a job that person had done.

Certainly, they had accomplished something excellent. No one else had accomplished the feat. The world would tell the person, as the movie suggested, that they had every right to brag about their accomplishments. Except, did that person really accomplish anything? In the eyes of those around them, they certainly did.

While the world wants to gloat and seek praise amid what they believe they have accomplished, for the child of God, we know the truth. Apart from God, we are nothing. Everything we are and everything we do is a gift and blessing from Him. Nothing in our lives is accomplished apart from God.

That’s the reminder in the first phrase of verse 10 in Psalm 81. God reminds the people that He is the one and only God, the only one worthy to be praised. He continues by reminding them of what He had done, bringing them out of Egypt. It was because of God that they escaped Egypt.

While the verse here was toward the children of Israel, we could all write this verse in our own lives. If this was written to you, what would the final piece of the statement be? One that quickly comes to mind is “I am the Lord thy God, the one who saved you.” Or maybe God delivered you from something, just like He did the Israelites.

Each of us can reflect on a moment in our lives when God did something specifically for us. Something personal and probably life-changing. Today, take a few moments to thank God and praise Him for it. He is worthy of our praise.

Across the world, there are Christians that need encouragement and strength that only God’s word can provide. We are focused on helping Christians find encouragement, develop stronger relationships with God, and help non-Christians come to accept Jesus Christ as Savior. As a non-profit ministry, Another Well Ministries relies on donations to continue our work. You can find out more about us and ways to support us here.
