But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart. — 1 Samuel 16:7
Recently, my wife wanted to pick up something at our local mall. I remember back in my younger days, the mall was somewhere that I went to often. Now, it seems that I will try to find any reason not to go. There is one specific store that is only in the mall, and she had something she needed.
As we entered the mall, we entered through a large department store. Everywhere you could look there were items that implied they could make you better. It started with cosmetics, the perfect outfit, and perhaps some cologne. Best of all, the sign said something about being beautiful on the outside.
That is the focus of our world today. Now, more than ever, it’s all about what is on the outside. The world wants you to appear perfect. Society tells us that we should be without any visible flaws, even though that’s impossible!
I love the words to Samuel in this verse. Man may only see what is on the outside, but God sees the heart. God is not concerned that you have the nicest things in life. Things like perfect hair, the perfect figure, wardrobe, fancy cars, or anything else don’t impress Him. God wants your heart.
The world wants you to exhaust yourself attempting to be perfect. God realizes we are not perfect. That’s why His plan is one of forgiveness. The world wants to look at everything but your heart. God says that your heart is the most important part. How is your heart? Above all, our hearts must be surrendered to God and focused on living for Him every day.
Across the world, there are Christians that need encouragement and strength that only God’s word can provide. We are focused on helping Christians find encouragement, develop stronger relationships with God, and help non-Christians come to accept Jesus Christ as Savior. As a non-profit ministry, Another Well Ministries relies on donations to continue our work. You can find out more about us and ways to support us here.
