Many years ago, my job took me to Washington, DC. Over the course of a couple of years, I would fly to the city several times and find myself near the White House and the various monuments. On one occasion being in the city, I decided to take an afternoon and walk to see all the monuments that were there. They were certainly spectacular!
I’ll never forget two specific monuments that I visited. The first was the World War 2 Monument. My grandfather served in the war, and I enjoyed being able to reflect on his service during my visit. The other was the Vietnam Memorial. Over 58,000 names appear on that wall. Names of those who made the ultimate sacrifice in serving our nation. It’s a legacy that they left behind.
For some people, those names listed on the wall are nothing more than a name. For others, they are family, friends, or acquaintances. The names tell a story of service and sacrifice. It says a lot about the person, even though they are gone from this world. It’s a story that is left behind.
Not a single one of us is promised a specific length of life. At any point in time, we may draw our final breath in this world. But what will be the story left behind when someone sees our name? What will we be remembered for?
So many people are working to be remembered for fortune and fame. They want to be remembered for all their personal accomplishments. Instead, we should desire to be remembered for our service to God and leave behind a Christian witness. We should want our story to be one that would point others to Christ, even after we are gone.
