For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.  — Romans 1:17

A few weeks ago I sat down with my son as he was watching a television show. It was a kid’s cartoon that he loves, but I will never forget the storyline. In the cartoon, a character was going around trying to fix things in his life and the lives of others. As one thing would go wrong, he would simply say, “I’ll take care of it.”

By the end of the show, he was so busy trying to fix things that he had lost sight of the things around him. He had forgotten that there were others that cared and, in the end, he needed them to “fix” what was happening. While the story came from a cartoon, it certainly sounds a lot like us, doesn’t it?

After all, we will do everything in our power to “fix” things in life. We want control over things and for many of us when we do not feel like we have control, bad things happen. Feelings like frustration, depression, aggravation, and so many others sneak in. At times they even consume us where we lose sight of the things going on around us.

The simple statement in Romans 1:17 is a great reminder for all Christians. Only six words that should guide every part of our lives. It says, “the just shall live by faith.” If you take a look at those words, it’s clear that there will be times in life when we may feel helpless, hopeless, and that things are out of our control. We may not always have the answers.

Our lives were not designed to always have the answers or to always be in control. Our lives were designed in the image of God, as one ready to serve Him. We can conquer the frustrations, anger, depression, and fear when we realize that we must live by faith. Not just when the times are good. We must live by faith in all aspects of our lives.
